Mac OS 10.7
Everyone, this is just a reminder that PrintSmith is currently not
compatible with Mac 10.7. They have dropped Rosetta which is required to
run the current version. We are working on a version that will be
compatible and hope to have it out by the 4th quarter.
We will let you know when it is available.

In other words, don’t try to install 8.1.14 on a brand new Mac running OS 10.7 because the Rossetta emulation mode is no longer there. The next version required an entire re-write so things should get interesting when it finally arrives.

This is no surprise. Apple made the switch to the intel chip 4-5 YEARS AGO and Printsmith did nothing this whole time to keep up. Every update to Printsmith for the last decade has been small, irrelevant and mostly reactionary. There’s been no innovation whatsoever with this product and I’ve been deeply disappointed, i.e. “hope to have it out by the 4th quarter”. Simply pathetic. This business model is identical to “Blockbuster”. Too little, too late.

The last EFI Connect that I attended in August of 2009 said the re-write for Apple would be ready by 1st quarter of 2011. Obviously, that didn’t happen.
In fact, we have had the same version for 2 years now. The only new feature has been the integration with Xpedx.

Beta testing is just starting and I will be one of the beta testers. They are estimating the first quarter of 2012.

Since Adobe no longer developes Flash for mobile devices and folks would want PrintSmith to work on ipads and handheld devices … coding PrintSmith in Flash would unthinkable.

If you have to upgrade your mac:
A possible short term solution: I kept my old machine and have it on the network with no monitor, keyboard, or mouse. One of my favorite applications for managing multiple Macs is Apple Remote Desktop (ARD). It is $299 for 10 managed systems and $499 for unlimited. I use this to connect to my old machine and work in PrintSmith Classic for now until the new version (PrintSmith Vision) comes out later this year in the 2nd or 3rd quarter.
Now if you do not want to purchase the ARD software, I can suggest a free solution.
1. Assign a static local ip address to the old computer, so it does not change with DHCP
Go to system preferences, to sharing, turn on screen sharing.
2. Go to your hard drive on your new Mac Mini
Go to the System folder
Go to the library folder
Go to the core services folder
Grab the screen sharing icon and pull it onto your dock.
Type in the ip address of the old machine
enter a user name and password for the old machine
Work on PS from there.
Next time you will only need to click on the screen sharing icon on the dock, enter the ip address, and go.
This is a way you can cheat and get one of the most valuable features of ARD without the expense.
I am only doing this on my own machine that I needed to upgrade it for other reasons. I am not going to update my other workstations until later in the year, if they are kind enough to continue working 🙂
Also, FYI if you download Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection for Mac you can get to your PC’s on your network from your Mac in the same way. MRDC is a free download. Put it in your dock, enter a pc ip address, log in and go.

Todd, I just talked to a sales rep at EFI this morning and they are saying October of 2012 should offer up 10.7 compatibility but it also sounds like a complete overhaul of PS since they are referring to it being ‘Browser Based’
