PrintSmith 8.1.14 is not compatible with Mac OS 10.7 (Lion)

FYI: Ron Teller from PrintSmith posted this on the EFI Forum:

Mac OS 10.7
Everyone, this is just a reminder that PrintSmith is currently not
compatible with Mac 10.7. They have dropped Rosetta which is required to
run the current version. We are working on a version that will be
compatible and hope to have it out by the 4th quarter.

We will let you know when it is available.

In other words, don’t try to install 8.1.14 on a brand new Mac running OS 10.7 because the Rossetta emulation mode is no longer there. The next version required an entire re-write so things should get interesting when it finally arrives.

Wide Format Stock Definitions Can Be Tricky for Costing

Setting up a Wide Format can be challenging if you haven’t done it before. Take a close look at this screenshot to see how to do it.

Wide Format Stock Definition
Wide Format Stock Definition Screen Shot

I included the Production Data window from a job to show how the Costing works for the job. The important things to remember are:

  1. Check the Radio Button for Large Format, which uses a roll of stock.
  2. Keep your Minimum Order Length small, in the 12 to 24 inch range.
  3. Calculate your Costing Units by the Square Inches for the entire roll.
  4. Your Cost should be for the entire roll because that is how you order it from your vendor.

Give it a try and be sure to test the results with an actual estimate or job. Good luck!

Reset Your Help Button in the Help Bar

The Help button on the far right of the “Help Bar” should take you to a PDF of the manual of your choice.

To set the PDF it takes you to, do this:

Open your PrintSmith Folder

Find the “help.pdf” shortcut

Double Click on it

It will start looking for the PDF

Click the browse button to find the PDF you want.

I set mine to the 8.1 Release notes

A new way to import a logo into your documents

They have added a few new buttons in 8.1.X, so it looks a little different now, you can actually import jpegs from the Shared Images folder.

The NEW way looks much easier (assuming you are 8.1.x): On your master, drop a jpeg file into the shared images folder. On your MASTER, Go to Admin > Document Preferences Choose the Format document from the Dropdown menu (You can use the default, as the image will be available for any document later)

Click on the Customize Form button Click on the Images tab On the right side, Choose the “Shared Image” radio button Choose the Browse button The Select A Shared Image window appears Select the logo you want (You may need to hit the refresh button)

Now your logo will be available to all documents, and you need to update the pricing folders. I imagine there is file size limit, but I’m not sure what that is at the moment.

Wait for PrintSmith 8.1.7 ……

Wait for PrintSmith version 8.1.7 if you still haven’t updated to 8.1.6. There is a serious pricing error with the “sets” function typically used for carbonless sets. If you haven’t upgraded from 8.0.x I would wait also.

EFI Connect is only 2 months away (April 18th) and it doesn’t look like we are going to the release of the next major upgrade before then. I believe the plan was to have version 8.2 released by the end of the 1st quarter 2010. Perhaps that is why the bug fixes have been taking 6 weeks when they used to take 2 weeks?

HarmonyForPrinters.com Poll on SurveyMonkey.com

Informal Poll to see if anyone is interested in the integration with WebsitesFor Printers.com called HarmonyForPrinters.com

Harmony is a communications tool designed to allow software providers to connect their products with our websites in near real time.
With Harmony, customers can place orders or request estimates on your WebsitesForPrinters.com website and have that information transferred directly to your integrated MIS system. Similarly, any changes you make to the order in your MIS system (such as job status changes) will then automatically update the same job on your website and notify the customer.

This two-way, integrated approach signifies an important milestone in software development for our industry. The tools are there for others to join suit, if they wish. (A gentle nudge from a few well-meaning WS4P customers might help.)

Information is also available online at HarmonyForPrinters.com.

Don’t Upgrade to 8.0.18 Yet!

There is a bug with a new feature on the Estimator Note Pad. In the past, you could always open the Estimator’s Note Pad, even if the invoice had been picked up, or “locked”. This latest version 8.0.18 does not allow this.  You can open it, but it is grayed out, and unusable.

Apparently, a few users wanted the Note Pad locked on voided invoices, and that new feature also grayed out, or locked, the Note Pad on picked-up invoices.

PrintSmith says it will be available again in the next release in about 30 days!
